APPLICATION FOR WEAPONS CARRY LICENSES

The weapons carry application, except for the signature can be printed, completed, and brought to your appointment. Those who wish to renew a Fulton County Weapons Carry License are still encouraged to do so using our mail-in renewal process. 


Obtaining a Weapons Carry License in Fulton County

In order to obtain a weapons carry license in Georgia, you are required to be photographed, fingerprinted, and must undergo a criminal background investigation by the GBI and FBI.

Upon receipt of the background investigations, if there is nothing to prohibit the issuance of your license, we will issue your license to you. The background investigations may take as long as one month. The license is valid for five years unless revoked.


New Applicants for Initial Licenses 

Those who are required to initiate a new application for a Georgia Weapons Carry License include the following:

  • You have never had a Weapons Carry License issued in Georgia
  • Your Georgia Weapons Carry License expired on its face more than 30 days ago
  • Your Georgia Weapons Carry License was issued in another county, other than Fulton. (You may be eligible for a renewal license, but cannot renew by mail.)
  • You must be domiciled in Fulton County
  • You must be 21 years of age; or If you are 18 - 20 years of age, you may apply for a weapons carry license if proof of the following is provided to the court:
    • that you have completed basic training and
    • that you are actively serving in the armed forces of the United States or that you have been honorably discharged from such service.
  • Your valid Georgia identification must show your current Fulton County address (P O Boxes will not be accepted). If your ID does not show your current Fulton County address, you should be prepared to prove your domicile with at least two forms of documentation such as: Voter Registration Card, Income Tax records, Property tax statements, Utility bills, Lease Agreements
  • If you have lived at your current address longer than 60 days and your valid Georgia Driver's License does not reflect your current Fulton County address, pursuant to § 40-5-33, other documents will not be accepted as proof of domicile.
  • Applicants must be fingerprinted onsite when submitting applications.
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must show proof of your lawful presence in the U.S.

Please see the list below before arriving at the courthouse.

  • Applicants MUST wear a mask or face covering and are strongly encouraged to bring their own pen to sign the application.
  • No one will be allowed in the office except for the applicants.

Pick up of Weapons Carry License is not available. All licenses will be returned via mail at your address of record.


Applicants Must Bring the Following Items to Probate Court:

  • Valid Georgia identification with current Fulton County address (P.O. boxes are not accepted);
  • The fee to apply is $80.00 (cash/money order taken at downtown office and credit/debit only at annexes) for the license. The fee includes on-site fingerprinting, criminal background check and mental health records check. If paying with cash at the downtown office, exact change is preferred due to a coin shortage related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please pay with exact change or with a debit/credit card. Your understanding and patience are greatly appreciated.
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must show proof of your lawful presence in the U.S.

Applicants for Renewal License

The Fulton County Probate Court is pleased to offer a new mail-in opportunity to our customers to renew their Weapons Carry License. The health and safety of all of our customers are of paramount importance, and this mail-in option will allow customers to observe recommended social distancing measures and minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19 for our customers, courthouse staff, and other members of the public, while also allowing for faster processing and less waiting in line. Customers who would prefer to renew their license in person may continue to do so by making an appointment with our staff.

Customers who wish to take advantage of the opportunity to renew their Weapons Carry License by mail should follow the instructions below:

  1. At this time, we are only able to offer the opportunity to renew by mail to customers who were issued a Weapons Carry License by the Fulton County Probate Court. Customers who have a license from another county who now reside in Fulton County must renew in person.
  2. Please print and complete the Weapons Carry License Renewal Application and sign the application in front of a notary public. (Applications that are not properly notarized will not be accepted.)
  3. Please fill out Affidavit form. 
  4. Please fill out Background Check Consent form.
  5. Please sign and date the Privacy Rights form
  6. Mail your completed, notarized application, along with a copy of your current Weapons Carry License and photo ID showing your current Fulton County address, a money order made payable to the Fulton County Probate Court in the amount of $37, to the following address: Fulton County Probate Court, Attn: Licensing Division 141 Pryor Street, Suite 2097, Atlanta, Georgia 30303. 
  7. All completed forms and payments must be received by the Court no more than 90 days before and 30 days after the expiration date on the face of the license. If received after 30 days of expiration applicant will need initiate a new application.

Replacement of Fulton County Weapons Carry License

If you have moved and need to update your address on your Fulton County issued license, you will need to bring your updated Georgia Photo ID reflecting your new residing address and current Weapons Carry license, to one of our 3 locations.

If your Fulton County issued license is lost, damaged, or stolen, you may obtain a replacement by mail. You must report such loss or damage to this court within 48 hours of discovering it, as required by law. You may call 404-613-4583 or email Michael.Moore@fultoncountyga.gov to make an initial report to this Court. If you wish to apply for a replacement license, you should:

  1. Print and complete the Loss Permit Affidavit and sign the application in front of a notary public. (Applications that are not properly notarized will not be accepted.)
  2. If your license was stolen, include a copy of your police report. If your license is damaged, you should return it to the Court with your application.
  3. Mail-in a copy of your current photo ID with the application. No address changes are available via mail. You must come in person for that.

Replacement Fee: $8.00 Money Order made payable to Fulton County Probate Court.

Firearms License Reciprocity

Georgia law authorizes the State of Georgia to recognize the weapons licenses of any other state whose laws recognize and give effect to a Georgia license. The following is a list of those states:

Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri , Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

ATTENTION! Georgia weapons license holders should familiarize themselves with the individual requirements and limitations on Georgia weapons licenses in any of the reciprocating states where they may wish to exercise their rights. Weapons laws vary from state to state and there may be municipal or county ordinances regulating weapons in reciprocating states. Also, please note that reciprocating states may honor Georgia licenses in regard to firearms while not recognizing licenses as to other weapons, such as knives.

Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Virginia, and Wisconsin recognize only those Georgia licenses issued to persons twenty-one years of age or older; Georgia recognizes all Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Virginia, and Wisconsin licenses. For more information, visit
