Atlanta City Council Member, District 1; Member, Board of Health
Carla Smith is serving her fourth term as an Atlanta City Council Member. She lives in the Woodland Hills neighborhood, serving Council District 1. Ms. Smith takes great pride in representing the people who live in southeast Atlanta neighborhoods. In addition to serving as the City Council appointee to the Fulton County Board of Health, Ms. Smith is on the Villages of Carver YMCA Board of Directors, Grant Park Conservancy Advisory Board of Directors and Atlanta CEA Taskforce.

As a legislator, Council Member Smith has authored and co-authored some of the city’s most notable legislation including the Atlanta Belt Line project, public memorials, the Housing Opportunity Bond. In addition, she sponsored the Projection and Wrapped Signs for the Entertainment and Downtown Districts. Councilmember Smith advocates for good development, safe and green neighborhoods. Before she became a member of the Atlanta City Council, she organized neighborhood watches and community groups.

Council Member Smith believes in a “Green Atlanta.” In 2003 working with the City’s Environmental Affairs department she established Atlanta’s first Electronic Waste Recycling Day. This event was the catalyst for many similar events as well as retailers creating in-house recycling centers for proper disposal of handheld electronic devices. This event quickly became Atlanta’s largest recycling event. In 2010 the event expanded and became EcoDepot, which includes electronics and other hard-to-recycle materials such as tires and household hazardous waste.
